Sam, I would recommend the child NOT pet the dog while the dog is eating, even though Goldens are typically patient and good with children. I assume you are talking about a young child. Has the dog nipped at the child? Teach the child to let the dog eat, and when the dog has finished, then its ok to pet the dog. If necessary, put up a gate when the dog is eating, to keep children away.

Thanks for the commands. Does anyone know how to train a golden retriever to ignore a child petting while the retriever is eating?

I never had thought about how to (or how not to) pet a dog before I got my Golden from a shelter. She doesn't like having her head touched or pet, even by us, so we have to pet her on her chest, with a slow approach, and then she will usually allow it. Thanks for the tips. :)

Thanks! I got my Golden from a shelter, and she has needed some extra care. She is specifically afraid of the vacuum and brooms, but in general most loud noises and new people make her nervous too. She is 4 or 5 years old, but I hope that in time she can be desensitized and will know we aren't going to hurt her. Thanks again!
